Webinar Recap: Standardisation Emerges as a Strategic Driver for Europe’s Digital Energy Transition

As Europe accelerates toward ambitious climate and energy targets, standardisation is emerging as one of the most decisive forces shaping the energy sector’s future. This was the central message of the online webinar “How will standardisation affect your energy business in 2026 and beyond?” – held as a pre-event to the upcoming EU Regional Digital Energy Summit 2025, which will take place between 3 – 4 December in Ljubljana.

The session brought together experts from technology, industry, and regulatory spheres to examine how interoperability standards and EU-level frameworks are redefining the way energy systems are designed, connected, and scaled.

A Turning Point for Europe’s Building and Energy Systems

The EU is moving rapidly toward its 2030 energy and climate goals, but most of its building stock still falls short of meeting energy efficiency and decarbonisation requirements. The future lies in sector coupling — connecting electricity grids with intelligent building systems, electrified heating and cooling, and flexible demand-side resources.

However, without a coordinated approach to standardisation, these developments risk becoming fragmented, inefficient, and expensive to scale. Throughout the discussion, speakers highlighted why standardisation is no longer a technical afterthought — it has become a strategic priority for businesses, regulators, and technology providers alike.

“We can’t build tomorrow’s energy systems on isolated solutions. Standardisation is the key to interoperability, scalability, and trust,” said Miha Bobič, Head of Balancing and Control at Danfoss.

Key Topics and Insights

Participants gained early insights into the work of High-Level Forum on Standardisation Working Group 9 (HLF WG9), which is shaping the EU’s interoperability agenda for energy and buildings. The speakers — Miha Bobič (Danfoss) and Yann Fromont, Deputy President of T&D Europe — explored several critical themes that will influence market developments in the years ahead:

  • Standardisation as a strategic driver – influencing investment decisions, product development, and market access across the energy value chain.
  • The role of BACS (Building Automation and Control Systems) – and why smart control, heat pumps, and chillers are becoming essential enablers of grid-connected energy savings.
  • DSOs and digital control – turning buildings from passive energy consumers into active, flexible players in the energy system.
  • European interoperability frameworks – building a common language between technologies, systems, and stakeholders.

Yann Fromont emphasised the importance of aligning technological innovation with standardisation efforts:

“Interoperability is not a regulatory checkbox — it’s the backbone of a resilient, efficient and competitive energy system.”

Looking Ahead: Spotlight on Standardisation at the Digital Energy Summit

The webinar served as a strong prelude to the upcoming EU Regional Digital Energy Summit 2025, where standardisation will be one of the many topics shaping the two-day programme. Alongside AI-ready grids and digital twins, business intelligence and security will define how Europe can scale its energy transition efficiently and securely.

Now in its fourth year, the Summit will convene top energy and digital leaders to address the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Hot topics will include artificial intelligence, flexibility, smart grids, data analytics, machine learning, IoT, cybersecurity, smart metering, interoperability, and sector coupling.

Why It Matters

The energy sector is entering a new phase — one defined not just by rising demand, but by unprecedented complexity. As AI, renewables, and data-driven systems reshape how power is produced, distributed, and consumed, standardisation provides the foundation for stability, scalability, and value creation.
